  • What you need to know about the Grenoble cable car… +

    One of the first urban cable cars in the world!

    Inaugurated on September 9, 1934, the Grenoble cable car is one of the first urban cable cars in the world after Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town!

    Its technical characteristics:

    • Operating system: back and forth, each car rolls on its carrying cable,
    • Two dodecagonal cabins (twelve sides) in wood,
    • Capacity: 15 people per cabin + 1 cabin attendant.
    The cable car is increasing its capacity!

    1951: change of cabins:

    • Two new metal and rectangular cabins,
    • Capacity: up to 21 people and their cabin attendant.

    1959: redevelopment of the lower station:
    A waiting room with a capacity of 100 people completes the reception area of the lower station.

    The Grenoble cable car enters the era of automated controls and becomes “Télépulsé”.

    1976: The Grenoble cable car enters the era of automated controls and becomes “Télépulsé”.

    Its technical characteristics:

    • Operating system: rotary motion, continuous unidirectional. The cabins are supported by a carriage rolling on a carrier cable, and are pulled by another cable called “tractor”,
    • New cabins: The famous “Bubbles” of Plexiglas and aluminum, a symbol of the city of Grenoble even today.
    • Capacity: 2 trains of 4 or 5 cabins of 6 passengers each.
    • Construction of a new, more modern lower station.
    The Cable Car today!

    2005: Dressing and rehabilitation of the upper station as part of the accessibility works carried out on the Fort de la Bastille.
    2009: Covering and rehabilitation of the lower station.
    2016: The “Bubbles” are 40 years old and the industrial automatons are replaced by new generation equipment.
    2021: A cable car bubble turns green in a nod to the title of “European Green Capital 2022” that Grenoble has won.
