The Régie du Téléphérique is studying the reuse of construction materials for its rehabilitation project for Place Tournadre at Fort de la Bastille in 2023.

The Bastille of Grenoble and its cable car committed to sustainable and responsible tourism!

Throughout the year, the Régie du Téléphérique presented its eco-commitments for the Bastille site and its cable car, in connection with the themes of Grenoble Capitale Verte. Some are already well underway, others are yet to come.

“Whether it’s daily actions or longer-term structural projects, it’s towards sustainable and responsible tourism that all the teams are now working to project themselves into the cable car and the Bastille of tomorrow.” says Patricia Gallois, the director.

The Régie du Téléphérique has drawn up an environmental roadmap for the operation of the cable car,
the operation of the Fort de la Bastille and the organization of eco-responsible events.

1. The eco-responsible commitments of the Grenoble cable car:

• A 100% repairable device: maintenance, renovation and restoration of the various components of the cable car on site, locally, or even internally; conservation of a maximum of parts, restoration of the cabins since 1976 (we do not buy new ones),
• Recycling of greases, oils and maintenance products and storage in retention tanks and transport to waste reception centers,
• Manual polishing of aluminum cabins to replace the use of acid,
• Sensitization of drivers to eco-driving: Stop when no one is there, and reduced speed during low traffic,
• Cable car transport offered to all staff stationed in the fort (permanent or temporary): reduction of the carbon impact by limiting access by motorized vehicle.

Our commitments for 2025:
• The guarantee of 100% green energy for the operation of the cable car.

The cable car = a low-carbon, non-polluting means of mobility.
The Grenoble cable car = the 3rd oldest urban cable car in Europe – a historic installation and pioneer of soft mobility in urban areas

2. The eco-responsible commitments of Fort de la Bastille:

• A biodiversity inventoried and preserved for the respect of this natural site,
• Reasoned mowing and mowing. Practice of Eco-grazing on a maximum of space,
• Selective sorting at any point in the public space and educational “I vote” ashtrays,
• 2 compost points for restaurants,
• Waste collection operations several times a year.

Our commitments for 2025:
• Collecting rainwater to supply the Fort’s public toilets.
• The reasoned use of pedestrian paths: pedestrian circuits independent of VVT circuits, installation of sorting bins along the routes, enhancement of the biodiversity of the hill.
• The closure of the access road to the fort for the general public.
• The dismantling of obsolete installations in the dry meadow.

3. Eco-responsible events and activities:

• Reduction of the carbon impact by limiting access by motorized vehicle: room rental with compulsory cable car transport, accessible activities only on presentation of the day’s cable car ticket, extension of the opening of the cable car outside of normal hours,
• Referencing of committed service providers; use of local products and short circuits, waste management, respect for the site, control of noise pollution, etc.
• The ban on the use of disposable dishes: ecocup or rental of professional washable and reusable dishes.

Our commitments for 2030:
• Rainwater harvesting, to supply the toilets in the reception rooms
• Development of renewable energies (EnR) for ecological heating of spaces, …

On the occasion of the title of Grenoble European Green Capital 2022, the Bastille is elected Totem place of this year and the Régie du Téléphérique is more committed than ever!

“In my place of life, work or study, I become a leader in reducing waste on a large scale and I find allies to promote zero waste together: compost, washable dishes, bulk purchases, homemade products, reuse, pooling, … »
Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

Playful ashtrays
« I vote ! »

On the Bastille site and at the foot of the cable car station, you will find ashtrays allowing smokers to vote for their favorite massif.
A fun and civic way to throw away cigarette butts. So ? Rather Belledonne or Chartreuse?

The Grenoble cable car: a 100% repairable device!

The Grenoble cable car is a ski lift whose components are maintained, renovated or restored on site, and in-house, as far as possible. This greatly limits the production of waste as well as the environmental impact. Part of the Régie du Téléphérique operating team is dedicated to the maintenance and upkeep of the device, which represents a total of 4,000 hours of work each year!

At the same time, the Régie du Téléphérique participates in the recycling of greases, oils and cleaning products by storing them in retention tanks and transporting them to the recycling center for further processing.

Waste management at the Bastille: a daily challenge!

With more than 300,000 visitors a year to the Bastille tourist site, the Régie du Téléphérique acts on a daily basis to not only keep the site clean and welcoming, but also to ensure better waste management.

Selective sorting bins are thus installed in various points of the public space. Every day, and this several times, the technical agents of the Régie du Téléphérique, as well as the concessionaires of the Bastille site, collect their waste in sorting containers, which are then taken care of by the services of the Métropole. Two compost points are also available for restaurateurs.

Encourage volunteer clean-up operations!

The Régie du Téléphérique is regularly approached by associations wishing to volunteer for cleaning or depollution sites. The latest was organized by the collective “Chartreuse Propre” as part of Grenoble Capitale Verte Européenne 2022.

4 wild dumps planned were treated in this way: a car wreck, a large stock of glass and crockery, a dump from a small platform on the ascent road, scattered waste throughout the Bastille sector. Transport by cable car was offered to all volunteers and the communication of this event broadcast on social networks.

Committed event providers!

At Fort de la Bastille, many professional or family events are hosted in the Lesdiguières and Dutrievoz reception rooms.

Service providers working in these spaces are free, however some are referenced and recommended by the Régie du Téléphérique such as La Fine Fourchette, French caterer, ISO 20121 certified.

This certification rewards the social and environmental commitment of the company as well as its anchoring in the local economic fabric. From waste sorting to the selection of local suppliers and the fight against food waste… All the challenges of a sustainable approach are framed by an international standard!

Patrice Knecht, Managing Director of the company, explains: “La Fine Fourchette is a company with a strong social dimension, which is anchored in our DNA. As part of our continuous improvement process, we have accelerated our transition to a sustainable approach. Our certification came to punctuate our commitments centered around the three major pillars of CSR: environment, economy, social”

“I perpetuate the “IsHere” section of my point of sale. I diversify my supplies to introduce local and/or organic certified products.”
Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

Did you know ?

Vines already existed on the hill of the Bastille. It was Marie-Louise and Hippolyte Gras, the 3rd generation of restaurateurs who launched the operation.
In 1955, nearly 5 hectares of vines produced each year
60,000 bottles of sparkling wine.

Rehabilitation of the vineyards of the Coteaux de la Bastille by Laurent Gras

In 2016, thanks to the support of the Association des Amis de la Vigne des Coteaux de la  Bastille and its ambassadors, Laurent Gras, restaurateur on the Bastille site, launched a new vineyard project.

Land preparation work has been carried out, the plot under the terrace as well as the one above the restaurant garden have been cleared and plowed. In the fall of 2017, the planting of more than 7,000 vines was carried out by Mr. Franck Masson and his team. The land above the restaurant hosts 3 red grape varieties: Persan, Mondeuse and Douce Noire to produce a blended wine with character and freshness. The land below the restaurant, meanwhile, produces a still white wine in Chardonnay: “Le Papé” as well as the cuvée “Les Grives” in over-ripened Verdesse.

“The first harvests were carried out in September 2020. This project is a real postcard for the people of Grenoble, for our house a return to basics and above all the emblem of Isérois know-how. We hope to be able to produce the “Mont Rachais” cuvée again in a few years, a sparkling wine as our Grandfather and our Father did until 1974. concludes Laurent Gras.

Diversification of supplies to introduce local and/or organic certified products

Whether at the O2 Restaurant, which is located in the heart of the Fort de la Bastille, or in the Per’Gras restaurant the same values are shared concerning the quality of the products offered: fresh products, purchases from privileged local producers, products certified AB, the restaurateurs are committed to the environment and quality food.

“The cheeses: Our selection comes from the Alpages cheese dairy of Mr Mure-Ravaud. MOF & World Cheese Champion. says Christophe Durand, manager and chef of the O2 Restaurant.

“In a quality but also ecological approach, we favor as much as possible local producers in a short circuit. We also offer products from farms or French fishing. Our country is rich in quality products, we are happy to cook them for you. Says Laurent Gras.

The La Salle des Gardes snack bar at the Fort de la Bastille also offers local products, including its homemade Grenoble walnut cake and its ravioli gratin. It is an emblematic dish of our beautiful region made with ravioli “des grands goulets” made in the traditional way, in the heart of our mountains, in the small village of La Chapelle en Vercors.

Focus on challenge 10.3 – Zero food waste

Examples of actions for Citizens:
• I adjust the amount of food I eat to my needs.
• I buy as few processed products as possible.
• I compost my food scraps.
• I use solidarity fridges to donate what I don’t think I can consume before the deadline.

Examples of actions for Associations – Companies – Institutions:
• I conduct actions with my employees and guests to reduce waste by modifying the quantities offered, self-service, packaging, choice, etc.
• I am aiming to obtain the “anti-food waste” label set up by law n° 2020-105 of February 10, 2020 relating to the fight against waste and the circular economy.
• I set up a reservation system for the canteen.

Example of action for Companies:
• I offer the possibility of taking leftovers away or reusing them.

Challenge 9.2 – Truly Public Transport

Examples of actions for Citizens:
• I subscribe to public transport.
• I use relay car parks to avoid returning to town with my car.

Example of action for Companies – Institutions:
• I encourage/encourage the use of public transport: communication, fixed price, access map, fares.

The Grenoble cable car, forerunner of guided public transport!

Inaugurated on September 9, 1934, the Grenoble cable car is one of the first urban cable cars in the world after Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town! Its technical characteristics:
• Operating system: back and forth, each cabin rolls on its carrying cable.
• Two dodecagonal cabins (twelve sides) in wood.
• Capacity: 15 people per cabin + 1 cabin attendant

It was not until 1976 that the famous “Bubbles” were born with the complete change of the device. The cable car becomes unidirectional and telepulsed. Two motors are then installed; an electric motor for its daily operation and a second thermal, emergency, used only in the event of failure of the first.

More details on this first urban cable car here

Today the mode of guided public transport has become a trend that large cities are tending to develop all over the world: low-carbon mode of transport, limit of the footprint of infrastructures, facilitated connections and reduced distances in difficult geographical areas. of access…

An incentive pricing policy: preferential rates for subscribers* to the M-TAG network

Because the Régie du Téléphérique is aware of the importance to be given to the use of public transport, it offers all year round to monthly or annual subscribers on the M-TAG network reduced rates for the Grenoble cable car: go -return at €6.10 instead of €9.00 one-way at €4.30 instead of €6.
*Compulsory presentation of the OURA card with its proof.

Daily commitments:

• The personnel of the Régie du Téléphérique: We favor public transport or soft modes of mobility to come to work but also for our business trips; meetings, fairs, training…
• Bastille operators: We issue free movement cards for the ski lift which we distribute to all personnel operating the Bastille site, so that they can access their place of work, without having to use as their personal motorized vehicle.

Integrate into the V63 thanks to secure parking lots.

The Vallée de l’Isère cycle route (V63) crosses three departments: Drôme, Isère and Savoie.
Its total length is about 200 km including 122 km in Isère. The V63 gives the opportunity to discover the department of Isère and all its riches in an exceptional setting: nature, steep mountains, panoramic view, fauna, flora, culture, history, …
The Régie du Téléphérique is committed jointly with local institutions to facilitating parking at the foot of the cable car for users of the V63 with the installation secure box futures.

“Reduce noise, pacify the territory. Because mastering our sound environment also means less stress for better health.”»
Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

Sport is health !

• I try to achieve 10,000 steps and 20-15 minutes of physical activity per day.
• I take advice from my doctor so that he prescribes me a physical or sporting activity.
• I favor physical and sporting activities that have a low ecological impact.
• I buy my second-hand sports equipment and donate what I no longer use.

The Bastille, the essential natural sports site of Grenoble!

Stepping stone to the Chartreuse massif and starting point for many trails, the Bastille is the privileged place for many sportsmen and also for Grenoble residents looking for family outings.
In all, they are nearly 300,000 each year to take the paths of the hill, and some daily!

From morning jogging, to night trail, through active walking or even a simple weekend stroll, all levels come together.
What to take care of your health by discovering a unique and preserved biodiversity facing an exceptional panorama of the city and the surrounding Alpine massifs!
Find all the detailed routes and trails here!

Zen activities!

The Régie du téléphérique animates the Bastille site throughout the year. These activities are always offered on presentation of a cable car ticket dated from the day. For more than 5 years now, the choice has been made to also program gentle sports activities, such as those of “Instants Zen” which offer to the cable car travelers Pilates, Yoga and Yogalates classes.

Zen Moments
A bubble of calm and well-being at the top of the Bastille!
Pilates and Yoga classes are back this summer! Take care of yourself, for a moment, enjoying a breathtaking view of Grenoble and its mountains.

The Grenoble cable car is a carbon-free mode of urban transport!

The Grenoble cable car works with an electric motor so it doesn’t generate fine particles in the atmosphere or gas emissions. Because air quality is a determining factor for health, the Régie du Téléphérique works daily to limit its carbon impact.
Take a look at our actions by reading our February article about air here! !

I act daily

It’s important to reduce noise and pacify the territory because mastering our sound environment also means less stress for better health:
• As often as possible, I travel with a silent means of transport,
• When I take a motorized vehicle, I drive calmly and make sure my exhaust is up to standard,
• I set reduction targets for my average fuel consumption.

“Intelligently manage the resource and facilitate access to water points for citizens. »
Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

Did you know ?
Water is a rare commodity on the Bastille site!
To bring running water to Fort de la Bastille, a network of water pipes and boosters had to be set up in the 2000s from Grenoble city center to the fort.

A water point accessible to all, provided by the cable car company!

The Fort de la Bastille welcomes an average of 600,000 people per year; tourists, walkers, sportsmen, Grenoble residents, …
At any time of the day or night, a water point located in the central square of the fort allows everyone to quench their thirst for free. The Régie du Téléphérique maintains and provides this water point using its own funds. It is the same for the toilets of the Fort de la Bastille.

Concerned about having to manage this natural resource more responsibly, the Régie du Téléphérique is launching studies in 2022 aimed at recovering rainwater to supply the toilets of the Fort by 2025.

Reasonable and responsible cabin cleaning!

The Régie du Téléphérique is of course in charge of the maintenance of the cable car but also the cleaning of the cable car cabins. This cleaning is generally done once or twice a week, depending on the need, and can be adapted each time.
The technical agents can thus clean all the cabins with a jet of water and a brush or only some by hand. Cleaning can be done indoors and/or outdoors as needed. Each service is done in a reasoned way to best preserve water resources, especially in periods of high heat and drought!

We commit ourselves…
By 2025, the Régie du Téléphérique plans to be able to clean its cabins by collecting rainwater from the roof of the lower station.

Treatment of infiltrations and optimum drainage!

Paradoxically, if the supply of drinking water is complicated for the site of the Bastille, the heavy rains which have multiplied in recent years constitute an omnipresent danger for the fortification.
The tightness of all the buildings making up the fort is undermined and the infiltrations increase each year, requiring major rehabilitation work.
For the end of 2022, the waterproofing of the “Cavalier Casematé” will be repaired in two places: above the Mountain Troop Museum and the Dutrievoz room.
Better drainage will lead to better runoff of rainwater and thus a supply of groundwater.

Our partners are also engaged!

In order to further reduce the impacts of transporting water for consumption purposes, the Bastille Art Center implements daily actions such as:

  • Provision of water bottles for the mediating team and the artists it hosts,
  • A provision of ecocups as part of its festive events in order to limit the proliferation of plastic bottles, harmful to our oceans, because “Here begins the sea”!

I act on a daily basis

Here begins the sea!
• I do not throw any waste in the gutters, nor any cigarette butts in the public space.
• When I garden or do housework, I choose products that are not toxic to water and aquatic environments.

Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

Did you know?
On presentation of your cable car ticket, you can have free access to activities offered all year round by the Régie du Téléphérique.

The Bastille is a site accessible to all!

In 2004, the Régie du Téléphérique with the support of the City of Grenoble launched the rehabilitation and enhancement project aimed at making the Fort accessible to all. The project aims to:

  • Social equity by developing activities of interest to all visitors and the accessibility (physical, cultural and social) of the site to all,
  • Environmental sustainability with the use of clean and renewable energies,
  • Enhancement of the heritage in a playful and educational form by affirming the unique character of the panorama but also by reinforcing the natural and sporting dimension of the site.

Physical accessibility of heritage

The infrastructure of the cable car makes it possible to transport people with reduced mobility, thanks to the development of a lift in the lower station and the installation of adapted cabins. Since 2005, lifts and footbridges have made it possible for people with reduced mobility to access the seven levels of the Fort. Then in 2008, the creation of a direct link with the Jardin de Ville, the historic center of Grenoble and the boarding platform of the lower station of the cable car was made to facilitate access to the ski lift.

Cultural and social accessibility

• 3 levels of catering: At the Bastille, there is something for all tastes and for all budgets. From the snack bar offering take-out food, to the gourmet restaurant Chez le Per’Gars, everything has been thought out so that everyone can eat according to their means.

• The discovery of the heritage of the Fort in free access: So that everyone can have access to the heritage of the site, exhibitions (history of the cable car from 1976 to today) and tables of interpretations of the landscape (geomorphology, town planning, the Olympic Games, industry and advanced technologies) are installed on the exteriors of the Fort which can still be visited with free access.

• Varied activities: At the Bastille it is possible to discover exhibitions designed on site at the Center d’art bastille, to take part in sports and fun activities at the Acrobastille leisure park, but also to return to the military origins of the Fort with the Museum mountain troops. It is a range of activities that is offered to visitors, families, leisure centers… To everyone!

• Entertainment offered to all: On presentation of their cable car ticket, visitors can take advantage of the entertainment program that the Régie du Téléphérique offers throughout the year, making the site and its cable car attractive and accessible to greater number.

“Put ecological innovation at the heart of all actions and all decisions, to learn how to produce and consume differently.”

Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

Did you know ?
In order to always guarantee the safety of travelers, each “Bubble” has a maximum lifespan of 12,000 hours, i.e. 3 years and a quarter. This is the time during which the cabin can legally remain on the cable. After that, it will have to go on a “Grande visite”. Since 1976, the “Bubbles” have been restored on site, the Régie du Téléphérique does not buy new ones!

The Grenoble cable car: a 100% repairable device!

The Grenoble cable car is a ski lift whose components are maintained, renovated or restored on site, and in-house, as far as possible. Part of the cable car management team is dedicated to the maintenance and upkeep of the device, and this represents a total of 4,000 hours of work each year!

The restoration of the cabins is one of the operations that is done in-house in the workshop located at the top station of the cable car. Each year, 2 or even 3 cabins are completely stripped and renovated with their suspension. This long and delicate operation, known as the “Grande Visite”, represents 150 hours of work per cabin.

The Régie du Téléphérique maintains and operates the Bastille site in collaboration with concessionaires who also have the influence of the tourist site at heart. They implement sustainable actions on a daily basis to develop their service while respecting and even preserving the place that welcomes them.

But also…
The Fort de la Bastille has two reception rooms which host professional and family events. The Régie du Téléphérique team supports its customers in the preparation of their events by offering them committed service providers using local products and short circuits.

The Restaurant Chez Le Pèr’Gras located at the top of the Bastille glacis is recognized as a Maître Restaurateur!

Since December 2009, Laurent Gras, chef and owner, has been certified by the Prefecture of Isère Maitre Restaurateur de France. This title was renewed in 2013 and 2018. This quality label certifies production based on fresh, local products and on-site production by our team of cooks. This title represents a demanding approach which guarantees you a know-how and quality welcome in our house.

Let’s talk about the Center d’art bastille. Located in the heart of the Fort de la Bastille, it offers a unique approach to contemporary art through exhibitions whose works are mainly produced in-situ, for their exhibitions and for their place!

All this means:
• A reduction in the transport of works since they are produced on site,
• A different consumption because the materials used for the realization of in-situ works are purchased at the scale of the territory.

“To give back its place to nature, in the heart of the city and around the city, for the benefit of the fauna, the flora, their interactions and the functionalities of the soil. »

Grenoble European Green Capital Agency 2022

The Bastille hill offers a rich and preserved natural heritage. Reasoned mowing and mowing, the small mountain is preserved but still wild. The Régie du Téléphérique has focused on the essential points of nature and biodiversity with its partners in recent years.

Did you know ?

The Bastille is classified as an area of ecological, floristic and faunal interest as part of the inventory of remarkable natural sites.

Fauna: On the Bastille, there is life! “In this oasis in the middle of the conurbation, wildlife still finds favorable places for nesting, hunting and wintering” (source: Livre de la Bastille de Grenoble et son Téléphérique). As the seasons go by, the animals find refuge in the Bastille. The diversity of the site’s environments (hillsides, dry meadows, escarpments and cliffs) is home to insects (praying mantis, butterfly, etc.), birds (Eurasian eagle-owl, shrike, etc.) and mammals (European hare , foxes, hedgehogs, etc.). You have to be very discreet to approach them.

The pond of the Bastille: The agents of the city of Grenoble and the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) dug and modeled the edges then the animal species come naturally to colonize the environment. A new pond was designed in May 2021 in order to accommodate two other endangered species: the palmate newt and the alpine newt. The ecosystem plays an essential role in the ecological network, it is for this purpose that a “Green and Blue contract” has been set up by the metropolis of Grenoble in partnership with the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Region, which is committed to the “Pond Restoration Plan”. In fact, ponds promote biodiversity and they serve as refuges for many endangered species such as amphibians, but also serve as a place for regulating and purifying water.

Flora: Campanula, Spindle, Orchids, Pistachio, Rock Violet… Have you ever seen all of these species on the site? The Bastille has inventoried 30 of them and is today covered with vegetation combining mountain and Mediterranean species. The flora of the places is strongly influenced by the microclimate. Many species, such as maple, thrive on the slopes of the hill. Of course the hand of man has made it possible to diversify the flora by planting many species in order to hide the fortifications. You should know that picking on the Bastille site is regulated.

Eco-grazing: The Green Spaces Department of the City of Grenoble has found an ecological and economical way to maintain dangerous areas that are difficult for humans to access in Bastille. Indeed, the Fortification of the site is a succession of steep slopes where the brush can test the solidity and the reading of the fortified work. It is following these reflections that eco-grazing began in 2014 on the site. Thus each spring, from April to May, different breeds of sheep and donkeys come successively to graze on the brambles and bushes at the Bastille.

Eco-driving is at the heart of our attention when it comes to energy. This behavior consists of reducing energy consumption, which is partly responsible for global warming. We have chosen a responsible use of energy in order to contribute to the common effort.

Did you know ?

The cable car has two motors. The first is electric and the second is thermal. The latter is used only in the event of a breakdown.

Our cable car drivers are made aware of eco-driving. For a ski lift, this is characterized by stopping the machine when there are no passengers in the stations but also by an adapted, and therefore reduced, speed of the device when there is a low influx.

The lighting of the Bastille site and its stations is controlled and programmed according to the time of sunset and the closing times of the cable car. Regarding our reception areas, lighting by LED or low-consumption bulbs is systematically preferred.

By 2025, the Régie du Téléphérique is committed to developing renewable energies (EnR) for space heating. The guarantee of 100% green energy for the operation of the cable car is also one of our objectives to achieve.
