A unique military heritage

The history of Grenoble is inextricably linked to the Bastille, a strategic site that has been occupied for over 2,000 years. This fortified limestone rock has evolved over the centuries:

  • 1591: The Duke of Lesdiguières builds the first fortifications on the hill, with only remnants remaining today, such as a turret.
  • 1692: Vauban draws up a report and a project for new fortifications for the Bastille. However, the project was never realized.
  • 1823 – 1848: Construction of the current fortifications by General Haxo to protect the Dauphiné from potential attacks by the Duchy of Savoy.
  • 1934: Installation of the world’s first urban cable car.

Listed as a Historic Monument, the Bastille is now a popular place for walking, history and leisure.
