The Bastille has been equipped with a lighting system to indicate air quality. An initiative to raise awareness and take action in favor of the environment.

What air do we breathe in Grenoble?
Since February 10, 2023, the pylon of the Bastille cable car has been adorned each evening with one of the 6 Atmo index colors (blue, green, yellow, red, purple, magenta) to indicate the air quality forecast for the following day.
The Atmo index, defined by the State and the Accredited Associations for Air Quality Monitoring, is based on the concentrations of five pollutants:
- Fine particles (PM10, PM2.5)
- Ozone (O3)
- Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
Every day, Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes calculates this index for all municipalities in the region.
Why this luminous initiative?
Goal
Raise awareness among the people of Grenoble about air quality and encourage eco-friendly behaviors.
Partners
Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Régie du Téléphérique, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, and the City of Grenoble.
The choice of the cable car pylon was made for its ideal visibility and its regulatory lighting function. The Bastille, a historical and tourist symbol, thus becomes a beacon of air quality for the residents.
How does it work?
The technical equipment includes:
- A control system installed in the upper station, connected to the Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes API to retrieve data in real time.
- LED projectors on the pylon to display the corresponding colors.
- Wireless communication between the upper station and the pylon to preserve the natural site.
Minimal impact:
- Low power consumption thanks to LED technology.
- Light pollution limited by downward orientation, in compliance with regulations.
Why take action on air quality?
Being informed about air quality helps you:
- Reduce your daily impact (transport, consumption, heating).
- Limit exposure to pollution peaks.
To act is to contribute:
- To the improvement of health and quality of life.
- To the preservation of the environment and the attractiveness of the area.
